SUMMARY 2007 ADGA ANNUAL MEETING Ft. Collins Colorado October 13-20 2007
During the Welcome Dinner at the 2007 American Dairy Goat Association Annual Meeting, Dr. Joan Dean Rowe received the prestigious Dr. Donald E. Bailey Practitioner of the Year Award from the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners. Dr. Rowe is a life member of ADGA, a Director from District 8, a veterinarian on the faculty at the University of California at Davis, and a breeder of outstanding Toggenburgs. Dr. Donald E. Bailey set the standard for small ruminant practitioners. He loves being a veterinarian, servant of the community, teacher of youth and of colleagues, giver of time and talents and laughter, and above all a wise parent and loving spouse. AASRP is better because Don put his stamp on it. AASRP therefore presents an award each year, named in his honor, to recognize the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioner of the Year. The award will be an etched glass bowl. The glass representing clearness of purpose and transparency of greatness, the bowl representing a reservoir for values necessary for success. The nominee for this award must meet ten very detailed criteria and final selection is made each May by the AASRP Board of Directors. Previous recipients have been Dr. Cindy Wolf in 2005 and Dr. Paul Jones in 2006. Dr. Rowe has been a member in good standing of both AASRP and AVMA for many years. At the University of California at Davis, Dr. Rowe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health and Reproduction and provides veterinary services through the Food Animal Reproduction and Herd Health Service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dr. Rowe provides veterinary services for sheep, goats, and cattle, and has been extensively involved with research in all three species. Dr. Rowe’s work with small ruminant Lenti viruses was instrumental in determining the epidemiology of these viruses in both sheep and goats, and her work with pathogenesis and control programs has been extremely helpful to producers trying to prevent or control these diseases in their herds. Dr. Rowe has also participated in research projects at UCDavis on bovine neosporosis, transgenic small ruminants, ruminant reproductive epidemiology and herd health management. Recently, Dr. Rowe has been involved with the drug application process and research necessary for pharmaceutical companies seeking FDA approval for use of CIDR’s in sheep and goats. Dr. Rowe has been instrumental in teaching small ruminant medicine and management to the veterinary students while serving as the AASRP student chapter liaison at Davis. As an active member of the United States Animal Health Association, Dr. Rowe serves on the Scrapie Committee and has presented the goat industry on the USDA-NAIS Animal Identification Committee. While a member of AASRP, Dr. Rowe previously chaired the Goat Committee at a time when there was not a goat-oriented member on the Board of Directors. She has participated in numerous continuing education programs for both veterinarians and small ruminant producers. For many years, Dr. Rowe has assisted with program development for the joint AASRP-ADGA veterinary continuing education program held each October during the ADGA Annual Meeting. Dr. Rowe has been actively involved with educational programs for small ruminant practitioners, producers and 4H members. With her husband Charles Rowe, Dr. Rowe raises nationally recognized Toggenburg dairy goats and participates in ADGA linear appraisal, DHI production testing and shows. Dr. Rowe is a licensed ADGA judge, an elected ADGA Director from District 8, chairman of the ADGA Production Testing Committee and member of the Advanced Judges Committee. It is with great honor, that Dr. Joan Dean Rowe is presented with the 2007 Dr. Donald E. Bailey Practitioner of the Year Award. |
